Site helps subcontractors avoid problems

“I asked what was the hardest part of his job — thinking I would hear about chopped-off fingers or long hours or annoyingly indecisive clients. “Getting paid,” he said with a sad grin. “Just getting paid.”

Anyone who has ever embarked on a remodel job has probably heard the plaintive litany from their general contractor: “I’m so sorry, the subcontractor didn’t show up. He’s on drugs. He won’t answer his cell phone. I don’t know what happened to him” — and so on. But the truth is that flakiness in the field of construction can cut both ways.

Looks like sub-contractors are beginning to fight back..

Crooked contractors leave clients in shambles in Texas.

Kathy and Terry Dahlke are slowly piecing their home back together, four years after a contractor left a $43,000 remodeling job unfinished.

The contractor said he ran out of money, although he had been paid in full, and left behind an unfinished garage, unstable staircase and shoddy kitchen, among other uncompleted jobs.

Although they got an indictment against the contractor for misusing their money, the Dahlkes haven’t recovered a dime.

“I feel like I have zero rights,” said Kathy Dahlke, 47. “And when it came down to it, I didn’t have any.”
